Running for City Council has been an interesting experience.
I learned that building my first website was not quite as easy as the reviews made it sound. But, the site has held together through the campaign and allowed me to hear from folks along the way.
I was reminded that door hangers will blow away if they’re not properly secured—I did not expect to shop for so many rubber bands! But, I haven't seen any of my door hangers in bushes!
I confirmed that long-time residents are a delight. Their memories, pride, and deep love for Golden run through every story they share. I also met many newer residents. It struck me how often they chose to move here for the same reasons long-timers stay: the small-town warmth, the wide neighborhood streets where kids can play safely, and the sense of belonging.
Knocking on the first door was hard for me—I am an introvert—but after that, each conversation made the next one easier. By the time I had knocked on hundreds of doors, I was enjoying connecting with people. The 45-minute conversations are not the best way to make it to many front-doors but I value those connections.
Though I’ve lived here for 41 years, I walked down quiet streets and found beautiful neighborhoods in our town that I had never seen. I came away with renewed appreciation for what Golden offers to many and a conviction to keep it a special place.
